Shawn HeskethQuestions(2)Answers(509)Posts(34)CommentsYou're right... GIFs are images, so even though they appear as animations, they're still treated as images by WordPress and your web server. MOV and MP4 files, on the other hand, are video formats. But it still sounds like you may be bumping up against the file size limits set by your web host. GIF files are small, but video files are usually larger, which is why most web hosts—especially inexpensive ones—limit the maximum file upload size.Your best approach is to contact your web host's support team and ask them to increase the maximum file upload size to something more reasonable. On Answer for Error message when trying to upload videosHi Kate,Since WordPress version 5.0, we've been able to simply copy content from Word and then paste it into a page or post.Gutenberg will automatically convert your pasted text from Microsoft Word (or a Google Doc, Apple Pages, Evernote, etc.) into HTML, which should render pretty closely to your original content.Keep in mind that fonts and colors may change, because your WordPress theme determines the fonts, colors, and styles for your website. For this reason, many writers these days prefer to simply write their content directly in WordPress, rather than writing in an external application, and then having to paste it into WordPress. Probably worth a trial run.Hope this helps! On Error when pasting from Microsoft Word into Gutenberg, due to empty reusable block.Hmm... here's what I see when I visit that page:https://www.wp101.me/llu0LD8pThere don't apepar to be any links that only appear when hovered over. Can you help me identify one of the problematic links? On Answer for Problem with link text color?Hey Michael,This is very much in flux right now. We will happily include videos for Full Site Editing as soon as it exits the beta testing phase. Right now, it carries a ‘Beta” label, becaase it is very much still in its infancy. It’s not ready for prime time just yet, and we cannot advocate for using it to build your site in its current state. That said, you don't have to pay for a commercial theme, if you don't want to. There are over 5,000 free themes in the WordPress.org theme directory, and just 90 of them support Full Site Editing. But if you're just learning WordPress, your best bet would be to use the Twenty Twenty theme. It's another of the default WordPress themes included in every new site, and it's the theme we use in the current version of our WordPress 101 video tutorials. If you activate that theme, you'll be able to follow along with our tutorials just fine.Hope this helps!ShawnOn Answer for WordPress 6.0Hi Adeleine,So sorry to hear you're having trouble with your WordPress website. We always recommend that you create a backup of your site before updating the core software, plugins, or themes.Where is your site hosted? Most WordPress hosts these days automatically create nightly backups for just this sort of event. You should be able to reach out to your hosting provider for support restoring your website to the previous version.Hope this helps point you in the right direction! On Answer for WordPress 6.0That’s great to hear. Rock on!On Answer for How do you set up a photo gallery page?Yep. The process is still the same. You'll add a Photo Gallery block to a page containing your initial images. Then, edit the block to add additional images later. When you edit an existing Photo Gallery block, you can also change the order in which the images appear, so you can add your newest image to the top.On Answer for How do you set up a photo gallery page? That's excellent. Way to go! 👏On Answer for Which option changes the background color of the payment box on the checkout page?Well, that's quite strange, because they list “New User Registration” right at the top of the list of email notifications you can customize with that plugin:https://wordpress.org/plugins/bnfw/On Answer for Change or add text in e-mail send by wpThat appears to be the new user notification that is automatically sent whenever a user registers on your site. It should be sent from WordPress, not from WooCommerce.Hope this helps! On Answer for Change or add text in e-mail send by wpFirst of all, for audio, you don't need to embed a link to an external source. Just upload the MP3 file(s) to your server, as I demonstrate in the video tutorial. As for the notice that you're “not allowed to upload this file type,” even for MP3 files, that's due to a limitation on your web server. Some hosts do not permit uploading certain file types to your web server. Though for the life of me, I don't know why they would permit MP4 files—which are tyically much larger—but not MP3 audio files.Still, you'll have to contact your web hosting support team to ask them to enable MP3 file uploads to your web server. With that issue sorted out, you'll be able to upload your own MP3 files and play them using the Audio Block player. On Uploading audioYes, with LifterLMS, you can choose whether to make any course or individual lesson free or paid. And, you can charge per course, or create a membership (like we've done on this site), that gives access to multiple courses to paying members. It's incredibly flexible. On Answer for What Plugin is used for WP101 My Courses progress and video tutorials? You can certainly install LifterLMS on your main site, without having to set up a subdomain. That's what we've done here... although I've done a LOT of customization to create the experience you see here on WP101. If I had it to do over again, I'd probably go ahead and put all my courses on a subdomain. That would provide much more flexibility when it comes to the presentation of your courses and lessons, without having to modify your primary site's theme. That's the approach many of my friends who use LearnDash have adopted, and it seems to work well. I think you'd be better served by the subdomain strategy. On Answer for What Plugin is used for WP101 My Courses progress and video tutorials?Interesting. When I look at the source code for that page, it looks like there are, in fact, two different widgets at play. The first one is a regular text widget with the title, “Book Ty Camlad Now.” It's possible that widget contains a shortcode that is responsible for displaying the Free to Book widget. The second widget actually has a class of .ftb-widget, which implies it's the actual Free to Book widget.Hope this helps in the troubleshooting! On Answer for Widget showing twice in sidebarYes, I'm pretty sure the Media Library only shows images or files that are used within posts or pages, not widgets. On How do I identify which duplicate in the media library is actually being used in a post? The REST API is used by the WordPress iOS application (as one example) to connect to your site. If you don't use the WordPress app, you'll likely never encounter an issue. Ideally, your web host should be able to resolve that error for you, but it sounds like you've had less than stellar support from your host.On Answer for Static front page takes forever to updateThere is definitely something squirrelly going on with your site, and I would recommend you reach out to your web host to sort it out. It still sounds like there's something wrong with the server-level caching, and only your web host will be able to troubleshoot that for you.To your question, no, your website and WP admin area are not separate websites. They do have a different URL; in fact, every page on your site has its own URL. But your entire WordPress installation sits on one server at one web address. So that does not explain why you're experiencing the issues with your homepage not including new posts when they're published. Finally, you mentioned an API error in your Site Health screen. It sounds like you may be referring to the REST API, which WordPress (and other applications) use to communicate with the server on which your site resides.Even though WordPress reports this as a critical error, it actually doesn't affect functionality of your website at all.On Answer for Static front page takes forever to updateIs your most recent blog post titled, “Inauspicious start with Barclays”?If so, I'm currently seeing that on the homepage, just below the headline, “Daily Dose Over the Fold.” Is that correct? On Answer for Static front page takes forever to updateThanks for sharing this update, Rita. That's frustrating, I'm sure. And I completely understand your reasons for not wanting to pay more for hosting. Out of curiosity, what version of PHP is your site currently running? You can find that information in Tools > Site Health > Info > ServerWordPress.org currently recommends PHP version 7.4 or newer. As long as your server is running at least 7.4, you should be okay for a while. On Answer for How do I update my php? There are more options and flexibility with the version of WordPress that is available at WordPress.org. And that is the same version of WordPress that is used by literally every other WordPress hosting company, besides WordPress.com.So, once you've decided to use the WordPress.org version, you need a host. GoDaddy offers Managed WordPress hosting, so you can simply sign up with your existing GoDaddy account. That will also make it a breeze to connect your domain name to your WordPress site.We recommend a number of Managed WordPress hosting companies. Read, “Best WordPress Hosting in 2021. Rather, the “Services” link simply links to a page: https://streamlineelectric.com/services-we-provide/Likewise, the link to, “ADDITIONAL SERVICES OFFERED” links to the page: https://streamlineelectric.com/additional-services/These are not “expanded menus”. They're simply pages, each of which contains different content. The “Services” page contains a couple of paragraphs of content, plus an unordered list of links to pages. The “ADDITIONAL SERVICES OFFERED” page contains a bulleted list, with none of the text converted into links. You'll want to edit the contents of each page if you want to make those list items link to their corresponding pages. But they're not making use of actual menus, which is why you're not seeing a change when you edit menus.Hope this helps point you in the right direction! On Answer for My pull-down menus aren't working properlyCan you share a link to the site in question, so we can see what's going on?On Answer for My pull-down menus aren't working properlyBTW, all of the Managed WordPress hosts we recommend also support the creation of WordPress multisite networks, which enables you to create a collection of sites that all share the same WordPress installation core files, plugins, and themes. So, whether you prefer to set up each site with its own dedicated hosting account, or multiple sites under the same account, the Managed WordPress hosts we recommend have you covered! On Answer for How do I create multiple sites?Hi Gwyned,There appears to be a syntax error in your code snippet above.background-image: url (“https://wp.me/aaOkpP-eS&”);Should be:background-image: url ("http://blog.gwynedtrefethen.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Sunrise-Over-Gulf-River-FV-scaled-e1609852105307.jpg");Note the straight quote marks. Your snippet included curly quotation marks, which won't work in CSS.I also swapped out the URL for the actual path to your background image. You could shorten that to:background-image: url ("/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Sunrise-Over-Gulf-River-FV-scaled-e1609852105307.jpg");See if those changes work for you.On Answer for How do I modify the header to display my site title and menu on top of a faint image of my art?Happy you worked it out, Gwyned. Many themes and third-party plugins also modify the image editor, and it can be tricky to determine which one is the culprit. In our videos, we try to demonstrate the default, out-of-the-box experience using the latest theme that ships with WordPress. In some cases, this means that our videos may differ slightly from what you see in your own WordPress site, though the core experience should be roughly the same.Hope this helps! On Answer for Why don't I have the same image editing features in the image block tool bar shown in the video?Happy to hear you were able to sort it out!On Why did Influencer theme disappear from my website? So happy to learn that you found this workaround, and shared it here for anyone else who may encounter this same issue! On Error when pasting from Microsoft Word into Gutenberg, due to empty reusable block.I'm happy to hear you figured this out, and thanks for sharing the steps you took to resolve this issue on your site. This can be done with a plugin, or a code snippet. (Read: “How to Disable Emojis in WordPress”)If your site was created by someone else, they may have disabled emoticons for some reason. But again, you can also just use the standard keyboard shortcuts — the same ones you can use in any app — to insert emojis. The option I mentioned above is only pertinent if you want to have WordPress automatically swap out the text equivalents with an emoji when the page or post is rendered. If you just use the keyboard shortcuts, you can insert any emoji you like. ????On Answer for How do I insert emojis into text in WordPress? No, you don't need a plugin to enable this functionality. We just use a form on our contact page. Then, all of our support conversations take place privately.I guess I'm not understanding exactly what you're trying to do. You said this is for support conversations. So, a user goes to a page on your site to start a support conversation, right? But, you don't want that user's conversation visible to other users, correct? That's what I'm not understanding. Why do you want these conversations to take place on a PAGE on your site, if you don't want the conversations visible to other visitors? I'm really not clear on your use case. Comments would be visible to everyone who visits the page in question. Have you considered using a third-party app like HelpScout? On Answer for Plugin search: Chat plugin that does live in a chatboxHi Ali,In my screenshot above, note that the alignment and width options are no in the same pop-up menu. If you don't see any width options, that could be because your theme has disabled them, or has not included support for those options. While WordPress supports all of these options, it's up to individual theme creators to specifically include the code necessary for their theme to support them.If you don't see those options, you may want to reach out to the creator of your theme to ask them when you might expect full support for the default WordPress layout options.Hope this helps! On Answer for Having trouble seeing the width options for cover imgaeHi Rio,That depends entirely on which plugin you're using for your contact form. WordPress does not include a contact form out of the box, so it's likely you're using a third-party plugin to create your contact form. If you can share which plugin you're using for your contact form, that might help us in troubleshooting the issue. We'll be standing by!On The contact form is not throwing errors, but it is not sending an email. How do I get the contact form to work? Thanks for sharing the link to your site. Makes things so much easier. With a quick look at the source code for your site, it looks like your theme may have been custom-designed just for you. Does that sound correct? In the CSS for your site I found this:footer .footer-top {background-image: url("/assets/images/footer-bg.jpg");background-size: cover;background-position: 50%;position: relative;}That means the image in your footer is found here: https://www.camofasteners.com/assets/images/footer-bg.jpgThe fact that it's located inside a folder called, “assets” tells me that it's managed outside of WordPress. That's indicative of a site with a custom or proprietary theme. You can still update that image by connecting to your web server via FTP. Then, you can replace or update the image in the /assets/images folder. It's unfortunate that whoever created the custom design for your site didn't provide a method for managing elements like this within WordPress. It's clear they didn't plan for you to change the design down the road. :)Hope this helps! On Answer for Change footer imageThat's good to know. Unfortunately, it still doesn't give us a clue as to why your posts are showing up automatically in your menu. That's not WordPress' default behavior, so it leads me to suspect your theme, Creatica. Beneath the page or post title, you'll find links to edit the page/post in either the Block Editor or Classic Editor. To your second question, you may have to change themes. When we spoke, I recommended you look at the Storefront Powerpack:https://woocommerce.com/products/storefront-powerpack/That add-on enables you to customize Storefront from top to bottom, and it's worth a look. That said, you may have a particular layout in mind, that you cannot create without changing themes. It looks like you're just trying to upload an image with a caption beneath it. It looks like you don't need this particular group of blocks. Try a simple image block, or a gallery set to display in 3 columns instead? On Answer for How do I delete a section in Gutenberg? It’s not clear from your video which text you’re trying to delete, as there is no audio. But if you’re referring to the placeholder text that WordPress is displaying, that will not show when you publish your page. It just contains instructions for you when you’re editing that particular block. On How do I delete a section in Gutenberg?Hi Dianne,The “Bulk Select” button in the Media Library is not a function of your theme. That's a default behavior of WordPress itself. Every file or image you upload to your WordPress site should appear int he Media Library. That's the method WordPress provides for managing ALL of your files and images, across all your posts and pages. So, as far as I'm aware, there is no way to disable the Media Library.Hope this helps! On Answer for How do I clean up my Media Library in WordPress? Our friends at Kinsta wrote an excellent article on how to incorporate custom Google maps into your WordPress site. And WPExplorer have compiled a massive list of 33 map plugins for WordPress.Does that help?On Answer for What's next? Thanks for sharing the URL, Dianne. I'm not sure which page(s) are performing correctly, and which ones are not, so it might be helpful to provide links to examples of two such pages, so we can better determine what's going on.Meanwhile, there is one obvious issue that I saw right away. I'm pretty certain the theme your site is using is obsolete, no longer supported, and has not been updated to maintain compatibility with the ‘Gutenberg’ Block Editor in WordPress 5.0 and newer. The theme you're currently using is called, “F2,” and based on its description page on the WordPress.org plugin directory, it hasn't been updated in more than two years: https://wordpress.org/themes/f2/Further, links to the theme author's homepage are broken: http://srinig.com/wordpress/themes/f2/So, it may be time to upgrade your site's theme to one that is up-to-date, better maintained, and compliant with the newest versions of WordPress. That said, we can also continue to troubleshoot why your images are appearing on some pages, but not others. That is quite strange, and most likely an issue with the theme, not WordPress itself. But I'll be happy to troubleshoot further when you can share links to examples of a page that is working correctly, and one that isn't.On Answer for Images are not showing up on the new pageI just remembered, our good friend, Brian Richards, over at WPSessions also has a comprehensive course that will teach you how to build WordPress websites, including all of the above skills, and much more.If you're interested in learning how to create custom WordPress sites, you owe it to yourself to check it out!On Answer for How to Create a Template in WordPressHappy to help, Ben. You're right... adding a full-width image to the footer of your site is a function of the theme. There's not a default method in WordPress for adding full-width images to the footer, and I'm not aware of any third-party plugins that will do this, either... because the functionality would vary wildly, depending on the theme you've selected. That's why it's more likely a function of the theme itself.A modern theme like Astra would handle this just fine.Hope this helps! On Answer for Footer PictureHey, Chuck, when you say “free version,” are you referring to one of the WordPress.com paid plans?Because the WordPress software itself IS free, and you can do anything you want with a Wordpress-powered site—including any/all of the changes you outlined above.Be sure to review our video on the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org:https://wp101.com/tutorial/wordpress-org-wordpress-com/On Do I need to upgrade to paid version? That's fantastic to hear, Chuck. That's why we're here!On Answer for Should I remove extra pages? What version of WordPress are you using? If your site is up to date, you should be using the new, Gutenberg Block Editor, which looks like the tutorial linked above. But if your site is still running an older version of WordPress prior to 5.0, you're likely still using the Classic Editor. In that case, “Discussion” is a module that appears underneath the Editor. Open the page in the Editor, and scroll to the bottom. If you don't see a meta box called, “Discussion,” then it's likely hidden. You can toggle it on by visiting the “Screen Options” tab in the top right-hand corner, and clicking the checkbox next to the Discussion option. Then, scroll back down to the bottom, and you should see the Discussion meta box.Hope this helps! On Answer for How do I remove comments from my Home PageHey John, can you include a screenshot of what you're seeing?By “Visual Builder,” do you mean the Gutenberg Block Editor, the Visual Editor mode, or some other page builder you have installed on your site?I'm not clear what you mean when you say that you, “saved it to Library.”And, what exactly is happening when you click the Publish button? If you can help me better understand what you're seeing and experiencing, I'll have a better idea of how to help. Thanks! On Gallery module created in Visual Builder in WP 5.03 is not publishing?Hi Wally,You're certainly not alone in your feelings about the new Block Editor in WordPress. If you dislike it, you can always install the Classic Editor plugin, which will hide Gutenberg and its new block editor.NOTE: By default, the Classic Editor allows you to switch between Classic and Gutenberg on a per-user or per-post level. This creates some confusion. So, after installing the Classic Editor plugin, we recommend you go to: Settings > Writing and change the default setting, “Allow users to switch editors” to “No.” That setting will completely hide the Block Editor from your site, as if nothing ever happened. The Classic Editor plugin will be supported until 2022, so you’ll have plenty of time to try Gutenberg later.Hope this helps! On The All-New WordPress 101 for WordPress 5.0 is Here!Happy you found the suggestions helpful, and thanks for the feedback on our video training. Also happy to hear our friends at Codeable have been helpful. We've got a list of several theme companies we highly recommend on our “Products we ❤️” page:https://wp101.com/resources/#themesAs for page builders, I recommend you look at Elementor and Beaver Builder. Those are the two biggest players, and most likely to adapt to the changes in the new, Gutenberg Block Editor era. The next phase of Gutenberg, which will be under development during 2019, is to add layout blocks. That could greatly affect page builders. But today, I'd recommend you look at one of those two plugins.Hope this helps! On Answer for How to properly make a Portfolio Grid?Hi Kat,In this video, part of Joe's Introduction to Gutenberg course, he demonstrates the process of converting an existing post (or page) into the new Gutenberg block editor:https://wp101.com/tutorial/making-a-regular-blog-post/You're right to be concerned about the impact to your existing pages. I would highly recommend that you first experiment with this on a backup or staging server, before attempting to upgrade and convert your existing content into Gutenberg. What should happen is that your existing post will open in a new, “Classic” block in the Gutenberg Editor. You can then edit your content as you would have before.Or, you can click the button the top left-hand corner of the block to convert it to Gutenberg blocks. This is where things could get interesting, depending on the nature of your existing content. If you've only used basic formatting options in previous version of WordPress, your content should convert easily, and with no surprises. If, on the other hand, you've made use of 3rd-party shortcodes or page builder plugins, you may encounter some issues, until/unless the creator(s) of those products release compatible versions. If you've installed the Classic Editor plugin, you'll see no difference at all.No matter what, a solid backup strategy will be more critical than ever. And if you're hosting your site on a Managed WordPress host who offers a staging server as part of your hosting package, by all means test your site in that environment before upgrading your live site.Hope this helps! On Ready or not, WordPress 5.0 is here! So, whatever code snippet they provided to you for tracking the conversion rate needs to be [properly] added to the existing section. You don't accomplish this by simply adding a new section to a page or post on your site.Instead, you'll want to add that snippet using one of the methods I suggested above.First, check your theme options to see if there is a field for adding code snippets to your header or footer. I use a Genesis theme, which provides these fields in: Genesis > Theme Settings: https://cl.ly/1r2n0q1S0P36If your theme does not include settings like this, you can accomplish the same thing by installing and activating a plugin like: https://wordpress.org/plugins/header-footer/And finally, you can edit your theme files to manually add the code. BUT, that's not the best idea, since your changes will be overwritten the next time you update your theme. I wonder why you added a new `` section to your page? A webpage should only have ONE section, and that is usually included in your theme's code. Adding a new section could cause more problems than layout... it could result in SEO issues or worse. The correct way to add code to the section of your website is by either editing the theme code, using a function to programmatically insert code, or use a plugin like: https://wordpress.org/plugins/header-footer/Many themes, like Genesis, also include a field within the Theme Options to add code to your site's or section. At any rate, I'm happy you solved the visual issue. You should have, but it's possible that it was inadvertently overlooked, deleted, or even filtered as spam.If you're unable to find that email, you might log into your web hosting control panel to see if there is a link or other way to log into your WordPress admin directly from your web hosting control panel. A quick look at your website reveals that is hosted by Zettahost (which I've never heard of): https://www.zettahost.comIf neither of the suggestions above work for you, your only recourse will be to contact the support team at Zettahost and ask them to restore your access to your WordPress website, by editing the database for your website. There is a method for restoring admin access to your WordPress website, but it involves editing your MySQL database, and is generally not recommended, unless you know what you're doing. The steps are outlined here:https://www.wpbeginner.com/beginners-guide/how-to-reset-a-wordpress-password-from-phpmyadmin/Your web hosting company should be able to handle this for you. But I'm particularly interested in seeing the context — the rest of the WordPress administration panel you're seeing. I'm trying to determine if you're using a hosted WordPress.com site, or if you're using a WordPress.org self-hosted site, and the role permissions for your account may be blocking your ability to enable/disable those features.By default, every module includes the ability to enable/disable features. So we need to determine why your unique setup does not allow you to make those changes. Can you share a screenshot of your complete WordPress dashboard panel for Jetpack > Settings? On Answer for New OptionsHi Kim,Since we wrote this article, things have gotten even more confusing. While you can still create a hosted WordPress site for free at WordPress.com, they also offer many paid options. Among those options, if you want to use your own domain name, you'll have to purchase an upgrade... and suddenly, WordPress.com is no longer free. They also just announced the ability install 3rd-party commercial themes, which they've never allowed before. BUT, you must purchase their Business Plan in order to do so.So, the lines are becoming more blurred between WordPress.com and WordPress.org. Now, it pretty much boils down to this...WordPress is web publishing software that makes it easy for anyone to publish online. It comes in two flavors: the fully-hosted WordPress.com, and the self-hosted version, whose software is available for free at WordPress.org.BUT, when we say, “self-hosted,” we don't mean that it's hosted on your own computer. Rather, it means you'll have to purchase hosting from any of the dozens of companies who now offer managed hosting for WordPress. With WordPress.com, you get a highly-customized version of the WordPress software, plus premium hosting, security, and backups. You can even upgrade to a custom domain, like YourGroovyDomain.com. And, you can choose from pre-selected themes, which you can customize somewhat, with... you guessed it... another paid upgrade. And now, WordPress.com offers a more expensive Business Plan, which includes your own custom domain, premium hosting, security, and backups. PLUS, you can install your own 3rd-party commercial themes and plugins. The open source, downloadable version of the WordPress software that is available from WordPress.org requires that you find a host, which we mentioned above. But once you do, your WordPress site is completely your own. You can customize it in any way you see fit, install any 3rd party custom themes and plugins, and even sell products or display advertising on your site — options you won't have with WordPress.com hosting. This chart provides a simple overview, although (since it was create by WordPress.com), it's obviously biased toward their own hosted product: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/For example, the chart states that with WordPress.org, you'll have to “perform backups and maintenance yourself.” But that's not true, if you choose any of the Managed WordPress hosts we recommend — all of whom offer automated backups and maintenance, among many other features not offered by WordPress.com.In summary... if you want an easy way to start using WordPress to build your own website, consider WordPress.com. But you may soon outgrow it, and when you're ready to start customizing your site or using your website to genre revenue, you'll want to upgrade to WordPress.org — hosted by any of the excellent Managed WordPress hosts we recommend.Hope this helps clear up this confusing topic! On Why Do You Need a WordPress.org Site Over a Free WordPress.com Site?We actually highlight TWO methods for adding Google Analytics to your site — the first is manually adding the code, but the second is to use the MonsterInsights plugin. Hope this helps! On How to Add Google Analytics to your WordPress SiteThank you for including a link to the page on which you are attempting to add a link, Yvonne.I assume we're talking about the link to the “GUESTS LIABILITY AND INDEMNIFICATION AGREEMENT”.That link points to a file on your own personal computer. Here's the link code: <a href="file:///C:/Users/bookk/Dropbox/FILENAME.pdf">That's why it's not working. You can't link to files on your own personal computer. You'll need to remove lines 25-28 in the template file, since those lines pertain to custom functions that I created just for my site. Whether you purchased/registered your domain name with WordPres.com or another domain name registrar (GoDaddy, Namecheap, etc.), you can still move your site to a WordPress.org-powered version.Yes, you will still need a web host to host your new, WordPress.org-powered site. Once your site is set up/migrated, you'll just need to point your domain name to the new server where the site will be hosted. Your hosting provider should furnish instructions on how to do this.FWIW, here's a short list of WordPress hosts we recommend: “Which WordPress Host is Right For You?”Hope this helps! On Why Do You Need a WordPress.org Site Over a Free WordPress.com Site?Good question, Michael. I can see where the term, “self-hosted” can be misleading. The distinction here is that WordPress.com is a hosted service. They run a heavily modified — and limited — version of WordPress that is totally unique to their service. On the other hand, WordPress.org is where you download the free WordPress software that you can install on your own web server. But your web server is likely hosted by a hosting company, rather than on your own personal computer. But here's where it gets trickier. We actually don't recommend that you download and then install WordPress on a web server. Rather, we recommend Managed WordPress hosting instead. Among many other benefits, Managed WordPress hosts install and maintain WordPress for you... on their servers. So you don't need to download the software or manage a web server.Still... every Managed WordPress host installs the same version of WordPress you can download yourself from WordPress.org.Hope this helps to clarify the differences. Honestly, it's ridiculous. They should just name WordPress.com something completely different, since it doesn't even closely resemble the WordPress software you'll encounter anywhere else. But that's just my two cents. 🙂On Why Do You Need a WordPress.org Site Over a Free WordPress.com Site?Glad you figured out a workaround, Caitlin. But that issue definitely seems to be a bug of some kind. I've never seen the second section overlapped and hidden like that. I wonder if a 3rd party plugin is conflicting with the Javascript needed for the Customizer? At any rate, you can always fall back to the Appearance > Widgets or Appearance > Menus panels in the dashboard. To be honest, I still prefer those panels. 🙂On Answer for Add item to menu not workingGreat question, William. In short, yes, any changes you make to your theme via Appearance > Editor will be overwritten if/when you update your theme. This is why it's generally a good idea to use a child theme if you plan to customize your theme at all.But you don't need a child theme just to insert code snippets for Google Analytics, or other similar services. In addition to the two methods we mentioned above, many themes also include a field within the Theme Options or settings panel into which you can paste code snippets like this. For example, all Genesis themes include a “Header and Footer Scripts” meta box in the Theme Settings (screenshot). You can simply paste your code snippets into the header or footer using these fields. If your theme doesn't include a similar feature, you might install the Code Snippets plugin to add the same functionality to your site.Hope this helps! On How to Add Google Analytics to your WordPress SiteHi Deanna,Yes, you can have a completely separate website at a subdomain (e.g. blog.yourdomain.com), while still maintaining your WordPress.com hosted site at: www.yourdomain.comSubdomains are typically managed in your domain name registrar's control panel. Once you've created the subdomain, you can then point the subdomain at a completely different server, if you choose. So you might set up: blog.yourdomain.com and point it to another web server, on which you have installed WordPress (the downloadable, self-hosted version from WordPress.org).Hope this helps! On Why Do You Need a WordPress.org Site Over a Free WordPress.com Site?If it's another expert you want, and not GoDaddy, have you attempted to contact the WordPress experts at Codeable? Means a lot. And I couldn't agree more. Zac's been great to work with, and we look forward to partnering with him to create more courses soon. Stay tuned! On New Course: Getting Started with the Jetpack PluginHi Julius,While considering different LMS plugins, we were looking for these key “ingredients”: • Support for payments via both PayPal and credit cards, via Stripe. • Super-simple user interface for creating new courses and lessons. • Award badges and certificates upon completion of courses. • Customizable page templates to accommodate our existing site design. • Support for members-only Q&A forum. • Detailed analytics on conversions as well as student progress. • Support for selling courses à la carte, in addition to memberships. • Integration with MailChimp for email newsletters. • Engagement emails triggered by student's course progress. • Stellar support from a team who knows WordPress!LifterLMS was the first plugin that checked all those boxes. The other leading competitor was LearnDash. Both are excellent. In the end, two things tipped the scales for us.First, I really dislike features the rely on 3rd party integrations. The more moving pieces, the higher the risk for things breaking when one of those components is updated. I prefer the all-in-one approach of LifterLMS. Features we depend on, like email engagements, don't rely on a 3rd party service like InfusionSoft or MailChimp. Rather, they're created and sent directly by LifterLMS. The same thing applies to badges and certificates; some other solutions rely on integration with BadgeOS to power that critical functionality. But more importantly, LifterLMS is dedicated to putting the “human touch” back into online learning, something that is conspicuously missing from the majority of online learning solutions. Unlike many course creators who are more interested in generating revenue from their online course, I derive the most enjoyment from interacting with our members and students, answering their questions, and providing real-world guidance. LifterLMS enables me to have that level of interaction with our audience. And in the end, that's what matters most to me.Honestly, you should carefully consider LearnDash if you're looking to build an online learning site like WP101.com. But I strongly recommend LifterLMS — both the product, and the dedicated team behind it.Oh, and did I mention that LifterLMS also offers a “Done For You” service? They'll set up LifterLMS for you and help you create your first course, providing welcome advice along the way, and helping ensure your course runs as smoothly as possible for your students. Most themes declare a set of the image sizes used throughout the theme. Then, every time you upload an image, WordPress automatically resizes and/or crops your images to fit those specified sizes. But if you recently changed themes, it's possible that images you previously uploaded are not cropped to the correct sizes required by your new theme. In that event, you might check out the Regenerate Thumbnails plugin:https://wordpress.org/plugins/regenerate-thumbnails/It allows you to regenerate all the thumbnails and various image sizes for your current theme. You might try that if you think that might be the issue. On Answer for Pictures are not fully visibleSorry to hear you're having trouble with your ThemeForest theme.By default, there is no WordPress function to restore your site from a backup or previous version. As you've seen, “lifetime” membership means just that. :)Hope you continue to enjoy the new videos and remember, if you have WordPress questions you can always drop by the Q&A Forum and I'll do my best to answer. On What’s New in WordPress 3.9?Sorry to hear you're having issues with the 3.9 update, Joe. You're not alone. There are plenty of folks having issues like you've described. Here is a list of known issues with the new release:https://wordpress.org/support/topic/wordpress-39-master-listI know you don't want to go through the bother of disabling plugins, but that's almost certainly the cause of the bug you described. And I do have to disagree with the statement that 3.9 was released “without adequate testing.” That's simply not true. On the contrary, the development team has been actively encouraging plugin and theme developers to test their products with 3.9 for over a month. The core development team certainly can't troubleshoot bugs that aren't reported. Throughout the Release Candidate phases, there were only a handful of bug reports, and those were quickly addressed. With the information available, they made the right decision to release this version. The responsibility lies almost entirely with plugin and theme developers to ensure their products don't break under the new version. In this case, it appears many, many plugin developers simply couldn't be bothered to test ahead of time, but chose to wait until after the final release. It's a shame, because we ALL suffer as a result.I upgraded nearly 60 WordPress sites for my clients and had no issues, but that's likely because those sites used very few plugins, and only plugins that are very well tested and supported.Hopefully the lesson from this release will be that plugin and theme developers need to test much, much earlier. 🙂On What’s New in WordPress 3.9?Hi Mehul,I would not advise going up against Vimeo's TOS. If your content is found to be in violation of their terms, it will be removed and your account access revoked. For what you've described above, you might look at Wistia or consider hosting the video files on Amazon S3, then using a player like SumblimeVideo to play the videos on your site.I would also recommend optimizing your videos using a tool like Handbrake, because a 1.5 GB video file seems inordinate.Hope this helps! On 10 Reasons Why You Should Never Host Your Own VideosHi Rod,Actually, I don't recommend doing this with images. It will actually take longer to load images off a 3rd party site than from your own site. And, you can cache local images to speed up loading even further. There are plugins that enable you to pull in images from photo sharing sites like Flickr into your WordPress site, but I wouldn't recommend using those for images in posts and pages.Hope this helps! On 10 Reasons Why You Should Never Host Your Own VideosHi Ray,I think I've suggested this several times in the article and in the comments, but yes, Vimeo PRO enables you to not only hide the video from their public listing on Vimeo.com, but also restrict embeds to a specific domain (your own), which will prevent folks from embedding your videos on their own sites. This is the method we use on this very site to protect our videos for our members. But WordPress also makes it a breeze to password protect the actual page or post on which your video appears, which adds yet another level of protection.Hope this helps! On 10 Reasons Why You Should Never Host Your Own VideosHi Miguel,No, I don't think it's necessary to have a dedicated host for your site — provided you use the method I've recommended here of merely embedding video on your site, rather than actually uploading it to your web server. Assuming you're running a WordPress-powered site, I highly recommend a managed WordPress host like WP Engine. Otherwise, any shared host should be more than able to handle the delivery of your site's pages.Hope this helps! On 10 Reasons Why You Should Never Host Your Own VideosHi Max,Honestly, I can't tell you, since I've never attempted to pull a video feed into a site from YouTube. No idea how you might go about that. Maybe someone else will chime in here?On 10 Reasons Why You Should Never Host Your Own VideosHi Sarah,I have no direct experience with Screencast-O-Matic, but if it only supports recording at 10-15 fps, I'd recommend upgrading your tools. While Vimeo does recommend higher frame/bit rates, it's not a requirement. But if your clips are playing without sound, that is likely an issue with your local computer. You might also check in with the Vimeo forums to see if other users are reporting similar issues:https://vimeo.com/forums/Hope this helps! On 10 Reasons Why You Should Never Host Your Own VideosSorry you felt my article was just an advertisement for Vimeo. I assure you, while I strongly recommend Vimeo PRO for this particular application (WordPress users who would like to embed videos on their WordPress sites), I'm not affiliated with Vimeo in any way.I'm sure that a comparison of various video hosting providers would be great, but it's beyond the scope of this article, which was intended to answer a simple question... “What's the best way for me to add a video to my WordPress site?”On 10 Reasons Why You Should Never Host Your Own VideosIf you're planning to build a site that will enable folks to upload their own videos, you'll want to partner with a team who can help you build this properly, and navigate the legal issues as well. This is far beyond the scope of this site or this article. You will definitely want to get the terms and conditions right, since you're potentially dealing with tricky copyright issues. And I would NOT recommend Vimeo PRO to power a video hosting site like you're describing. You'll need to hire a team of developers who can build this right, using a reliable CDN (like Amazon S3) to deliver your videos. It sounds like you want to build your own mini-YouTube, so just consider the scale of that challenge as you move forward. On 10 Reasons Why You Should Never Host Your Own VideosHi Dave,There is no limit to the number of videos you can have on a site. Just follow my recommendation above and you'll be fine.On 10 Reasons Why You Should Never Host Your Own VideosSorry, but I can't really advise you on membership plugins for pay-per-view access. You might check out my friend, Chris Lema's excellent comparison of the most popular membership plugins. On 10 Reasons Why You Should Never Host Your Own VideosIf your site will be selling video files, I would think you'd be better served by building your own delivery platform, perhaps using SublimeVideo Player to show the videos on your site, and then some proprietary purchase/download system. On 10 Reasons Why You Should Never Host Your Own VideosThanks for weighing in, Jim, and for your recommendations. I think we're both recommending the same strategy... use a 3rd party host for your video, then embed it on your site.If you read the comments below, you'll see that I also recommend the excellent Video SEO for WP plugin by Joost de Valk, which includes full support for schema.org videoObject markup.Video cannot be crawled, but a transcript can. Another reason I suggest embedding video on your own site is so that the TEXT of your page can be indexed, and you'll receive SEO benefit. Thanks again for dropping by.On 10 Reasons Why You Should Never Host Your Own VideosSounds like you've run into the very reasons why I recommend using a 3rd-party hosting service. Yes, you can choose to hide the Vimeo logo from your videos. It's in the Settings panel. Hope this helps! On 10 Reasons Why You Should Never Host Your Own VideosThat's correct, Shelley. Vimeo PRO is a flat, annual rate, which includes unlimited embedded plays. But Amazon S3 is ridiculously inexpensive. Depending on the size of your video files, you may find it costs less. That says nothing about the fact you'll need to generate multiple versions of every video, and the other items I mentioned above. For my money, Vimeo PRO is the best value for the money, and peace of mind!On 10 Reasons Why You Should Never Host Your Own VideosHi Chris,I used Wistia in their early days. They are a solid video hosting platform as well, especially for commercial video. But, as this article was not intended as a comparison review of video hosts, I did not go into depth about all the video hosting platforms out there. One drawback to Wistia for many folks will be their monthly fees... from $25 to $300 per month, depending on the number of videos and amount of bandwidth you plan to use.Compare that to Vimeo PRO at $199/year, and it's easy to see which one is the better value for the money.Wistia does offer deep analytics, including a cool heatmap, which shows exactly which part of the video a viewer watched, skipped, or rewatched. Again, if you're providing commercial video in a membership site, you should consider it. But if you don't have the budget for it, Vimeo PRO is a better value for the money. (IMHO)On 10 Reasons Why You Should Never Host Your Own VideosHi Cesar,Thanks for dropping by! YouTube is the largest video host, and the second go-to resource for search, which is why I mentioned it above (see my point #10). As you said, it's a great source of traffic. However, if you run a membership site like this one, Vimeo PRO is a much better platform, because unlike YouTube, they enable you to hide your hosted videos from their public directory (something YouTube does not offer), and further specify a single domain (your own site) on which the videos can be embedded, which gives you an added level of protection against piracy. But if you do NOT need to protect your videos, and you're top priority is getting “eyeballs,” I highly recommend YouTube.Hope this helps! On 10 Reasons Why You Should Never Host Your Own VideosHi Edmund,Vimeo PRO does not support live video streaming, so I don’t think it would be the best solution for what you’re trying to do.As I’m sure you’ve already discovered, there are a number of live video streaming services like Ustream, Justin.tv, or Livestream, to name just a few. These services also provide embedded players, which means you can simply copy the code they furnish to you, then paste that into a page on your own site to provide the live stream directly on your site.Add a membership plugin to your site, and you can effectively protect that live video content for just your members. You'll have to test the players to verify playback in iOS devices, but I'd be surprised if these top-rated services didn't work across modern devices and browsers.Hope this helps point you in the right direction! On 10 Reasons Why You Should Never Host Your Own VideosHi Bugsy,You're right. If you are serving protected videos to your members, SEO is obviously not a part of the strategy. You can't hide member-only content AND have it indexed by search engines. On this site, the videos themselves are protected, which means search engines cannot index them. But the text is open for anyone, including search engines... so we still get some SEO benefit while still protecting our videos themselves.Hope this helps! On 10 Reasons Why You Should Never Host Your Own VideosHi Farhan,We actually use Vimeo PRO on this site, as it does protect videos from downloading. Further, you can choose to hide your videos from Vimeo's public directory, and specify a single domain (your own site) on which your video can be embedded. When my videos were hosted on Amazon S3, I used the S3FlowShield plugin to protect them from downloading. But Vimeo PRO is a much simpler solution, for all the reasons I outlined above.Hope this helps!ShawnOn 10 Reasons Why You Should Never Host Your Own VideosI use the excellent AT2020USB+ mic from Audio-Technica.When I first began recording screencasts, I started with the Blue Snowball, and later upgraded to the Yeti by Blue. When it was time to upgrade once again, I purchased and tested 6 of the top USB microphones on the market and the AT2020USB+ had a slight edge over the Yeti. Listen to the test for yourself here.On 10 Reasons Why You Should Never Host Your Own VideosAs I outlined above, Vimeo PRO is an excellent solution for this. It is, in fact, how I make videos available on this site. Vimeo PRO's settings enable you to limit embeds to a single domain, which provides a decent level of security, since the videos cannot be embedded on any other site, other than the one(s) you specify. You'll also want to use a membership plugin like MemberPress, MemberMouse, Paid Memberships Pro, or Restrict Content Pro to handle user registration, purchases, and hiding content from folks who aren't subscribed.Hope this helps! On 10 Reasons Why You Should Never Host Your Own VideosThanks for the laugh, Meagan, and the vote of approval. :)Since we've had so many requests for our new t-shirts, I've just set up a quick online store, powered by Printfection. We make no money on these, but hope you'll wear your "Never Stop Learning" tee with pride!http://www.printfection.com/wp101swagOn Win a Free “Never Stop Learning” T-shirt from WP101Hi Kathy,All the video hosting sites you listed work in exactly the same way. They furnish you with a tiny piece of code that is then substituted with a video player that is served by the hosting service. As such, there is no inherent SEO benefit to any one service over the other. However, I can highly recommend the excellent Video SEO for WP plugin by Joost de Valk. This plugin ensures that your pages are indexed as video results, so they catch the attention of the searcher more, rank better, and get you more visitors!Hope this helps! On 10 Reasons Why You Should Never Host Your Own VideosHi Frank,I would recommend including narration at the end of your videos that invites folks to visit your website for more information.Vimeo also allows you to include a URL at the end of the video, which will encourage folks to click through to your site. But ultimately, this is one of the trade-offs to listing your videos on a public video sharing site. Folks may watch your video and not ever take action. For this reason, I actually hide my videos from Vimeo's public listing, and only make my videos available on my own site.Hope this helps! On 10 Reasons Why You Should Never Host Your Own VideosActually, using the method I recommend (uploading your video to a 3rd party host, then embedding it on your own site) can offer you the best of both worlds. Some folks will find your video by searching directly on YouTube, or Vimeo. If you include links back to your site in the text description of your video, you may get some traffic from that.Video cannot be “crawled” or indexed by a search engine like text. So search engines don't index the actual content of your video no matter what; whether it's hosted on S3 or YouTube is irrelevant. And if you're hosting your video on S3 with CloudFront, you'll still be embedding the video on your site, which is no different—from an SEO perspective—as embedding a video from YouTube or Vimeo. But if you also include a transcript or supporting text about your video on the page on your own site, then you'll definitely receive an SEO benefit for your site, which is why I recommend this method, and why I use it on this site. :)Thanks for your question! On 10 Reasons Why You Should Never Host Your Own VideosNo. You retain ownership rights to content you create. From Vimeo's Terms of Service...“By submitting a video, you grant Vimeo and its affiliates a limited, worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license and right to copy, transmit, distribute, publicly perform and display (through all media now known or hereafter created), and make derivative works from your video for the purpose of (i) displaying the video within the Vimeo Service; (ii) displaying the video on third party websites and applications through a video embed or Vimeo's API subject to your video privacy choices; (iii) allowing other users to play, download, and embed on third party websites the video, subject to your video privacy choices; (iii) promoting the Vimeo Service, provided that you have made the video publicly available; and (iv) archiving or preserving the video for disputes, legal proceedings, or investigations.”Note the key area... “for the purpose of...” which specifically limits their use of your video to distributing your video, which is in fact what you're engaging them to do.On 10 Reasons Why You Should Never Host Your Own VideosThanks for commenting, MaAnna.I thought I was pretty clear that Vimeo PRO is my recommendation for any site, membership or not. I use Vimeo PRO on this site, which is a membership site.S3FlowShield is the script that I linked to in the section about piracy, so I'm happy to hear that you arrived at the same solution for your own site. I used it before the author upgraded it to support HTML5 video; it only supported Flash at that time, which didn't work on iOS devices. As you mentioned, it had FlowPlayer bundled with it, but it was a badly out-of-date version—about a year behind, in fact—and I found the developer to be very unresponsive to support questions. That's why I was thrilled when Vimeo launched their PRO level service for commercial video.I still maintain that the combination of S3FlowShield and Amazon S3 is overly complicated and will prove quite challenging for folks who are new to WordPress and web publishing. Too many moving parts to configure. Just learning Amazon S3's proprietary nomenclature (seriously, how are “buckets” intuitive?), plus configuring correct permissions for uploaded files in order to serve them over the web can be daunting for a beginner. But I'm happy to hear S3FlowShield has been updated, and works for your site. Still, I'll stand by my recommendation of Vimeo PRO. 🙂On 10 Reasons Why You Should Never Host Your Own VideosThanks for weighing in, Jim. You raise a controversial topic, and an important one for folks to consider. BTW, this is yet another reason why I tend to avoid YouTube, and prefer Vimeo PRO. I feel safer knowing that my videos are at least hidden from Vimeo's public directory. As I understand copyright as it pertains to public video hosting services, they're primarily interested in being able to deliver on their promise, which is to redistribute your content—the very reason you're engaging them in the first place. They're not likely to claim ownership of your video. Still, if you're uncomfortable with their terms, you're only left with the option to self-host your videos, along with all the issues outlined above. If you've got the server resources (e.g. a dedicated server) and are willing to go through the additional steps I mentioned above to convert and create the multiple files for every video, self-hosting is fine. But that's not the majority of folks, especially not folks who are just starting out. Thanks again for raising this important consideration. On 10 Reasons Why You Should Never Host Your Own VideosActually, Genericons is a font itself, so it won't conflict with any fonts already used in your theme. But no, it will not enable you to also change fonts within your theme.Hope this helps! On Genericons — a free, GPL, icon font for your site.Crop
