Automattic has released a free icon font for use in your own projects.
Genericons is a set of very clean, vector-based icons embedded in a webfont, which can be scaled to any resolution, or even styled with CSS.
The upcoming theme, Twenty Thirteen, which will be included in WordPress 3.6 makes use of Genericons, so check out the demo of that theme to see it in action.
To make it even easier to begin using Genericons, Mika Epstein has already released a plugin called Genericon’d. Install the plugin, and then begin using either HTML or simple shortcodes to display Genericons in your posts, pages, and widgets.
If you’re looking for a free set of icons to use in your site or other project, look no further than Genericons.

Will Genericons let me change fonts in the themes?
Shawn says
Actually, Genericons is a font itself, so it won’t conflict with any fonts already used in your theme. But no, it will not enable you to also change fonts within your theme.
Hope this helps!

Hello, is there any option to serve Genericons locally inside WordPress, instead of calling them from the Genericons website?
Shawn Hesketh says
There are actually several ways to use Genericons in your WordPress website. The easiest is to just install the Genericon’d plugin by Mika Epstein. Then follow the instructions to use the shortcode to display any Genericon in your pages or posts.
You can also download the SVG files and/or icon fonts, then upload them to your web server, using the instructions on the official GitHub page.
But, since this article was published nearly five years ago, the Genericons project has not really grown much. If you’re looking for a much more robust set of icon fonts, you’ll want to check out the more popular Font Awesome instead.
And this excellent tutorial, by our friends at Elegant Themes, covers how to use Font Awesome on your WordPress website.
Hope this helps!
