Any suggestions for a good source of free templates. I am just learning WP so don't want to commit to spending big money until I feel happy with it.
I produce web sites only with 'pages' mainly, not too bothered about posts.

By far the largest source of free WordPress themes is the official theme directory here: https://wordpress.org/themes/
The official WordPress theme directory only includes themes that have been carefully-vetted for coding standards. They've received the official ‘stamp of approval’ by WordPress itself.
Outside of the WordPress theme directory, it gets more tricky to find free themes. Many companies who make commercial WordPress themes also release one or two free themes to increase visibility of their brand.
For example, the talented designers at Array Themes have a number of free WordPress themes available. Just click the 'Category' drop-down menu and choose 'Free' to view their free WordPress themes.
WooCommerce has made their popular Storefront theme free as well.
But be cautious when searching for “free WordPress themes” on Google. Many free themes are created by maliscious individuals, and may contain malware.
And, free themes rarely include udpates or support. So you'll likely be going it alone if you encounter issues with the theme down the road.
