What are the most important precautions to take to protect your site against hacks from the time you initially set it up?

I am about to set up a site and would like to know if there are any essential plug-ins to install to protect a WordPress site?

If you don't host your site on a Managed WordPress host, you'll want to look at one of the plans from Sucuri.net or VaultPress.
