I am not a current WP user. I have BlueHost and use directory privacy to create a user and password that is shared to all users that I want to have access to my site. What I would rather have is each user having their own username and password which they manage. Is "subscriber" users the way to do this in WP or is there a better way? Additionally, I want a public homepage, with a login required for other subpages.

Hi Jennifer, Excellent question. Out of the box, WordPress includes support for multiple users, each with their own unique username and password. But those user roles are intended to control who has access to edit and create content on your site... not necessarily who has access to view certain pages on your site. This video tutorial (part of our WordPress 101 course) covers how to add new users to your WordPress site: https://wp101.com/tutorial/adding-new-users-2/ But what you're describing is actually more like a membership site. You want to have a public-facing homepage, with users being required to login in order to access other content on your site. You can easily add membership capabilities to your site, using a number of excellent plugins. I recommend you start by taking a look at these three...
  • Restrict Content Pro
  • MemberPress
  • WishList Member
Each one has slightly different features, but they all enable you to easily create a membership site using WordPress, and then protect content for just logged-in users. Hope this helps!
