Not a secret at all. Happy to share that WP101 is currently powered by LifterLMS. In fact, you can read all about our migration to LifterLMS in this blog post:

Shawn… very helpful and timely information. I’m ready to install LifterLMS, but I have a question. I have a typical website that includes a home page, several squeeze pages related to different packages of coaching and training, and a blog. I can’t decide whether to install the LMS on my main site or to create a subdomain and install it there. Any thoughts on which might be better, or on how to make my decision?

You can certainly install LifterLMS on your main site, without having to set up a subdomain. That’s what we’ve done here… although I’ve done a LOT of customization to create the experience you see here on WP101. If I had it to do over again, I’d probably go ahead and put all my courses on a subdomain. That would provide much more flexibility when it comes to the presentation of your courses and lessons, without having to modify your primary site’s theme. That’s the approach many of my friends who use LearnDash have adopted, and it seems to work well. I think you’d be better served by the subdomain strategy.

Yes, with LifterLMS, you can choose whether to make any course or individual lesson free or paid. And, you can charge per course, or create a membership (like we’ve done on this site), that gives access to multiple courses to paying members. It’s incredibly flexible.
Thanks
