When I start developing my site how will I know I am working in .org and not .com?

Hi Robert,

First off, look at the domain name for you site. Does it end with “.wordpress.com”? That's the biggest clue.

Next, if the dashboard and user interface looks nothing like our videos, you're probably using WordPress.com. About six months ago, they released a new version of WordPress.com that was completely rewritten from the ground up, and includes a completely new dashboard. It's light blue in color, and the navigation menu on the left hand side looks nothing like the dashboard in our videos.

Hope this helps, but if you need further clarification, feel free to follow up any time!

Thanks , Shawn
It appears I am working with wp.com. My url is: canadianviews-YMO.ca, and I am working with the Adaptive theme which appears to be the right one for my blog. Do you see any problems here?

Shawn Hesketh replied 9 years ago

If your site is powered by WordPress.com, you won’t be able to install custom themes. You’ll have to choose a theme from the included list of themes they allow.

When I visit the URL you included, it just points to a landing page that indicates the site is still under construction. If you plan to use your own domain name with your WordPress.com-hosted site, you’ll have to purchase an upgrade, then complete some additional steps to link your custom domain to your site:

https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

These two items only apply to the free, hosted version of WordPress at WordPress.com

These caveats do not apply if you use the downloadable version of WordPress available for download at WordPress.org.

(Or if you use a Managed WordPress host, like we recommend: https://wp101.com/why-managed-wordpress-hosting/

Hope this helps!
