Every day, visitors arrive at your site, read a single post, and then leave without a trace. You never get to learn who they are, what they care about, or how to reach them again.
Adding a simple personality quiz changes everything.
It turns out, almost nobody can resist answering the question: “Which personality type are you?” An interactive quiz taps into that natural curiosity, turning casual readers into active participants who will happily share their contact details just to learn more about themselves.
In this guide, you’ll learn how to build a fully automated personality quiz from scratch, without writing a single line of code or wrestling with complicated settings.
Why I Add Personality Quizzes to My WordPress Sites
A personality quiz is simple: you ask a few light, engaging questions, and instead of giving a right-or-wrong score, each visitor gets matched with a specific personality type.
Because people naturally love learning about themselves, personality quizzes feel less like filling out a form and more like a fun, interactive conversation. That subtle shift transforms a passive reader into an active participant on your site.
Based on my hands-on experience running live WordPress sites, here are the main reasons I recommend quizzes for growing your audience and capturing more leads:
- Irresistible Engagement: Before adding a quiz to my hobby site, most visitors would read a single post and then leave. After adding a short personality quiz, a huge portion of those readers stayed engaged all the way to the results page. That extra time on page tells search engines like Google that your site offers valuable content, which can boost your overall search rankings.
- An Email List That Actually Grows: Visitors are much more likely to share their email address in return for an interesting result that feels personal to them. In my experience, a quiz opt-in converts significantly better than a generic ‘Subscribe to my newsletter’ form because the visitor immediately gets something valuable in return.
- Free Market Research: Every quiz submission acts like a mini survey response. By looking at their responses, you’ll gain valuable insight into your audience’s preferences, making it much easier to choose blog topics, or even create products and services for your visitors.
- Built-In Shareability: Getting visitors to share standard blog posts can be tough, but they’re much more likely to share quiz results. Every time someone shares ‘I got the Visionary personality type!’ on social media, they’re directly endorsing your site. In fact, every share acts as free word-of-mouth marketing, driving a fresh stream of organic traffic back to your WordPress blog or website.
Even better, you don’t have to write custom code or use multiple tools to create an engaging personality quiz. The right WordPress plugin will handle the questions, the scoring logic, and the results for you, making this one of the easiest ways to boost engagement on your website.
Step 1: Install WPForms and the Quiz Add-on
You can quickly and easily create a personality quiz using WPForms. This drag-and-drop form builder comes with a dedicated Quiz add-on built specifically for graded tests and personality quizzes, so you don’t need to set up any additional tools or use tricky workarounds.
There’s also a free version of WPForms that allows you to build all kinds of essential forms. However, it doesn’t include the Quiz add-on, so you’ll need to upgrade to a Pro plan ($199.50) or higher, in order to follow along with this guide.
After purchasing WPForms Pro or higher, you’ll need to install the plugin on your site. If you’ve never done this before, our step by step guide on how to install a WordPress plugin walks you through the entire process.
Upon activation, go to WPForms » Addons. Here, find the Quiz add-on and click its ‘Install Addon’ button.

Once installed, click its ‘Deactivated’ slider so that it shows ‘Activated.’
With that done, you now have everything you need to create an engaging personality quiz.

Step 2: Plan Your Personality Types and Questions
Before opening the form builder, I always spend a few minutes planning my personality quiz, and I encourage you to do the same. After all, visitors will abandon a quiz that feels completely random or directionless.
Before writing a single question, it’s a good idea to map out your end results. In my opinion, three to five personality types is the perfect balance. Having only two options can feel a bit too basic and limited for your visitors, while creating more than five makes it difficult to write balanced questions.
When it comes to naming your outcomes, keep them short and positive. Labels like ‘The Planner,’ ‘The Explorer,’ and ‘The Creator’ are instantly recognizable, easy to understand, and fun to receive. When every result feels uplifting, visitors are far more likely to share their results with others.
Next, sketch out your questions. I usually aim for 5 to 10 questions with multiple-choice answers, making sure every answer clearly maps to one of the personality types.
Don’t worry about getting everything perfect upfront. This is just a rough framework, and you can rewrite and fine-tune things inside the WPForms form builder at any point.
Step 3: Create Your Quiz Form and Enable Quiz Mode
With your plan ready, it’s time to open the WPForms builder. From your dashboard, go to WPForms » Add New Form.

On the setup screen, type in a name for your form. This is just for your reference, so it’s a good idea to use something that’ll help you identify this form later, such as ‘Reader Personality Quiz.’
At this point, you can either start with a blank form or choose from WPForms’ 2,000+ ready-made form templates.
For a quiz, I usually start with the ‘Blank Form’ option so I have full control over the layout and questions, so that’s what we’ll be using in this guide. Simply hover over the Blank Form option and click the ‘Create Blank Form’ button when it appears.

This opens the main WPForms builder. On the left, you’ll see all the available fields that you can add to your form. On the right, is a live preview so you can see exactly how your form will look to visitors.
Before doing anything else, you’ll need to enable the quiz features by going to Settings » Quiz. Here, click the ‘Enable Quiz’ button.

As soon as you enable this setting, WPForms adds brand-new quiz tabs to your builder interface. You’ll now see Questions, Outcomes, Results, and Settings options, which we’ll work through in the next few steps.
Step 4: Choose the Personality Quiz Type
Right after enabling quiz mode, WPForms will ask what kind of quiz you want to build. This choice matters because it changes how WPForms calculates and presents the final result.
WPForms gives you three options, and it’s worth understanding how each one works so you can select the right fit for your site:
- Graded Quiz: This option scores correct and incorrect answers, before displaying a final score, percentage, or letter grade. It’s ideal for testing knowledge or creating a certification-style assessment.
- Weighted Quiz: This lets you assign point values to individual answers, and the total score decides the final outcome. This works best for readiness assessments where certain responses should carry more weight than others.
- Personality Quiz: Rather than calculating points or grades, this option maps each answer to a specific personality type. When a visitor finishes the quiz, WPForms displays the personality type they matched with most often.
For this project, select Personality Quiz.

After choosing your quiz type, you’ll be asked to add a Title and Description.
It’s a good idea to treat these as a friendly introduction for your visitors. Keep the title inviting and write a short, encouraging sentence or two for the description so readers know exactly what to expect.
Step 5: Add Your Personality Types
After selecting the personality quiz type, your next step is entering the specific results you planned back in Step 2.
To set them up, scroll to the ‘Personality Types’ section. Inside this area, enter each of your personality types using the short, positive names you chose earlier.

To add extra personality types, simply click the ‘+’ field. Alternatively, if you want to remove a personality type, then find its accompanying ‘-’ button and give it a click.
If you delete a personality type after mapping answers to it, don’t forget to update those questions. It’s crucial you reassign those answer choices to another personality type, so they don’t point to an outcome that no longer exists.
Step 6: Add Your Questions and Map Each Answer
This is where your personality quiz really comes together.
To begin, click on the Fields tab to head back to the drag-and-drop builder. Here, select the Questions tab.

WPForms has three field types that you can use in your quiz:
- Multiple Choice: This displays answers as radio buttons where visitors can select one option. Multiple Choice is my go-to for classic ‘choose one’ questions.
- Dropdown: This displays single-choice answers in a clean dropdown menu. Dropdowns are particularly useful when a question has many different options and you want to save space on the page.
- Checkboxes: This allows visitors to pick more than one answer at once. This works best when a question has several true responses, such as ‘Select all the criteria that describes you.’
To add a question, simply drag your preferred field from the left-hand menu and drop it onto your live form preview. I’ll be using the Multiple Choice field, but you can use any fields you want.

After adding your field, click to select it in the live preview. The left-hand menu will update to show all the settings you can use with that field.
This includes areas where you can type in your question text alongside your answer choices.

After adding all this information, click to activate the ‘Include in Quiz Scoring’ toggle.
This tells WPForms to include the visitor’s response when calculating their matching personality type.

With that done, a ‘— Choose Personality —‘ dropdown menu will appear beneath each individual answer. For every answer, click that dropdown and select the specific personality type that answer should map to.
This step is essential because it’s the only way WPForms knows how to calculate the final result. If you don’t map an answer choice to a personality type, WPForms won’t tally that response toward any outcome.
Simply repeat this process for all your answers, until every choice is mapped to a personality type.
After that, just repeat these steps to add all the questions and answers to your personality quiz.
Step 7: Create Your Outcomes and Set the Logic
Next, you’ll write the customized results messages your visitors will see when they complete your quiz. To do this, click the ‘Outcomes’ tab.

Straight away, you’ll notice that it includes a ‘Default Outcome.’ This is the fallback message WPForms displays if a visitor’s answers result in a tie or no clear match. It’s a good idea to write a friendly, neutral message here so every visitor gets a positive result.
To create a result for a specific personality type, click the ‘Add New Outcome’ button. You can now type in a name for this outcome. This is just for your reference, so you can use anything you want.

For most personality quizzes, I keep things simple and show a custom message right at the top of the page.
To do this, select ‘Personality Quiz’ from the Type dropdown menu. Then, type in the message you want to show when someone gets this particular personality type.
After that, tell WPForms when to show this specific outcome by activating the ‘Enable Conditional Logic’ toggle.
Next, open the first dropdown and select ‘Show.’ Then, open the next dropdown and choose ‘Personality Type’ followed by ‘Is.’

Finally, open the ‘Select Personality’ dropdown and select the matching personality type.
Simply repeat these steps for every possible personality type so WPForms always displays a unique, targeted message to every visitor.
Step 8: Collect Visitor Contact Information
If you’ve been following along, you’ve now created a fully working personality quiz. However, before publishing you may want to add some extra fields so you can gather valuable information from visitors, such as their name and email address.
This is where a fun quiz becomes a genuine lead-generation tool. When visitors are eager to see their results, they’re far more likely to share their contact information with you.
To add these extra fields, click the Fields tab to return to the familiar drag-and-drop builder. In the left-hand menu, find the Name and Email fields, then drag and drop them onto your live form preview.
You can then click on each field to configure its settings in the left-hand menu. For example, you might make the email field mandatory by activating the ‘Required’ slider.

Step 9. Connect Your Email Marketing Service
If you want to go a step further, you can send participants follow-up content that matches their personality type, such as targeted product recommendations, relevant blog posts, or personalized discount codes.
To make this easier, you can connect WPForms directly to your email marketing service by selecting the ‘Marketing’ tab.
Here, you’ll find integrations for popular providers including Constant Contact, Mailchimp, Brevo, and ActiveCampaign. Simply click on the provider you want to use.

From there, follow the on-screen instructions to connect WPForms to your marketing platform.
Alternatively, you can skip connecting an email provider for now. WPForms will automatically save all entry data in your WordPress database so you can view or export subscribers later.
That said, connecting your email service now allows you to start following-up with those early subscribers straight away.
Step 10: Embed and Publish Your Quiz
The final step is putting your quiz on a page so visitors can take it.
Right before publishing anything, I always click the ‘Preview’ button. I then click through the questions to make sure the scoring logic and outcome messages work as expected.

Once you’re happy with how everything looks and functions, click the ‘Save’ button. Now, you’re finally ready to embed the personality quiz in your WordPress website.
The easiest method is to open the page or post where you want to display the quiz. Then, click the block ‘+’ button and search for ‘WPForms.’

When the WPForms block appears, click to add it to your layout.
Next, open the dropdown menu inside the block and select your ‘Reader Personality Quiz.’

After that, simply publish or update your page as normal. Then, visit the page in a new browser to see your personality quiz in action.
If you want to get as many submissions as possible, another option is adding the quiz to its own custom landing page.
Unlike a standard post or page, a landing page removes navigation menus, footers, and sidebars. This distraction-free design keeps visitors focused on taking your quiz and entering their email address. This can significantly boost your completion rates.
You can easily create a custom landing page using a page builder plugin like SeedProd. There’s even a free version of SeedProd on WordPress.org, so you can test it out without spending anything.
For step-by-step instructions on setting this up, check out our complete guide on how to create a landing page in WordPress.
Watch Your Quiz Results Come In
Once real visitors start taking your quiz, WPForms automatically collects all their data for you. To view your submissions, go to WPForms » Entries in your WordPress dashboard.
Then, find your personality quiz in the list and click to open it.

You’ll now see a complete breakdown of all the submissions. This includes a clear chart showing how people answered each individual question, along with exact counts for every choice.
Reviewing this data gives you direct insight into user preferences, so you can easily spot trends and track which personality types are the most common amongst your readers.

Frequently Asked Questions About WordPress Personality Quizzes
Building a personality quiz usually raises a few questions along the way. To help you launch without any problems, here’s the answers to the most common questions I hear from our readers.
Can I build a personality quiz with WPForms for free?
No. While the free, lite version of WPForms does a great job at creating straightforward contact forms and basic surveys, the Quiz add-on requires a paid WPForms license.
If you’re working with a tight budget, you can download WPForms lite and test out its form builder to see whether it’s right for you, without spending a cent. Alternatively, you’ll find plenty of other quiz tools in our guide to the best Typeform alternatives.
Which WPForms plan do I need for the Quiz addon?
You’ll need a Pro license ($199.50) or higher to access the Quiz add-on. This add-on handles the scoring logic and outcome mapping, so you can’t build a true personality quiz without it.
How many questions and personality types should my quiz have?
In my experience, three to five personality types and five to 10 questions tend to work the best. This provides enough depth to feel meaningful without overwhelming visitors or causing them to abandon the quiz before finishing.
As I covered in Step 2, taking a few minutes to plan your structure upfront pays off enormously. If you’re unsure where to start, I recommend creating shorter quizzes and seeing how they perform. A shorter, engaging assessment almost always outperforms a long, tedious one.
My quiz is showing the wrong result. How do I fix it?
Incorrect results are almost always caused by missing or misconfigured answer mapping. If you didn’t assign an answer choice to a personality type, then WPForms will ignore that response, which skews the final results.
To fix this problem, select your quiz question in the WPForms editor. Then, check that every answer choice has the correct personality type assigned to it.
Start Building Quizzes Your Visitors Love
If you’ve been following along, you now have a fully working WordPress personality quiz that engages your readers, collects their email addresses, and helps you understand what your audience truly cares about.
That is a genuine upgrade to how your website connects with visitors.
To build on this momentum, check out our comprehensive video library. It covers everything from essential site setup right through to advanced strategies for expanding your audience and growing your email list.

This is a great example of how interactive content can do more than simply increase time on page. The audience research aspect is particularly interesting. Quiz responses can reveal what readers actually care about and help publishers make better decisions about future content. I also like the recommendation to keep the number of outcomes relatively small so the experience stays simple and enjoyable.
