Do you want to make your website look busy with little popups showing recent customer activity?
Social proof notifications are a fantastic way to build trust and encourage action on your website.
You can show notifications that say “John from New York just purchased this product” or “Sarah just signed up for our newsletter.”
Now, adding these notifications to your site is actually easy if you use the right tool. And the best part? You don’t need to know any coding to make it happen!
In this post, I’m going to walk you through a simple, step-by-step process to add social proof notifications to your WordPress site. We’ll use a user-friendly tool that makes the whole process a breeze.
First, let’s get a quick understanding of what social proof notifications are and how you can use them in the right way to maximize their benefits.
What are Social Proof Notifications?
Social proof notifications are small, non-intrusive pop-ups that appear on your website to showcase recent user activity.
These notifications typically highlight actions taken by other visitors, such as:
– Recent purchases
– Newsletter sign-ups
– New account registrations
– Product reviews or ratings
The concept of social proof is rooted in psychology. It’s based on the idea that people are more likely to take action when they see others doing the same. By displaying these real-time notifications, you’re essentially saying, “Look, other people trust us and are engaging with our site. You can too!”
Social proof notifications serve several important purposes:
1. Building trust: They show that your website is active and that others are interacting with it.
2. Creating urgency: They can encourage visitors to take action, fearing they might miss out.
3. Boosting conversions: By leveraging the power of social influence, these notifications can increase sign-ups, sales, and other desired actions.
While social proof notifications can be powerful, it’s important to use them tastefully and ethically. The goal is to provide genuine, helpful information to your visitors, not to mislead or pressure them.
In the following sections, we’ll show you how to easily add these notifications to your WordPress site, enhancing your user experience and potentially improving your site’s performance.
What You Need to Add Social Proof Notifications in WordPress
WordPress doesn’t come with built-in social proof notification functionality. To add this feature to your site, you’ll need to use a social proof notification plugin. For this tutorial, we’ll be using TrustPulse – the best social proof notification tool available for WordPress.
I’ve chosen TrustPulse for this tutorial because it offers a powerful yet user-friendly solution for adding social proof notifications to your WordPress site.
TrustPulse is designed with non-technical users in mind. Its intuitive interface makes it easy to set up and customize notifications without any coding knowledge. It allows you to create various types of social proof notifications, including:
- Recent Activity
- On-Fire
- Visitor Count
- Action Messages
You can display both real-time user activity and static messages to keep your notifications fresh and relevant. Plus, TrustPulse lets you target the kind of activity you want to track and where you want it displayed on your site.
With the right tool in hand, let’s get started with the tutorial.
Step 1: Adding TrustPulse to Your Site
To get started with TrustPulse, go to the TrustPulse website and click on the “Get Started Free” button. Choose a plan that fits your needs and complete the sign-up process.
Next, log in to your WordPress dashboard and navigate to Plugins» Add New. In the search bar, type “TrustPulse” and install and activate it.
Open the TrustPulse dashboard inside your WordPress admin. Now you can connect your existing account.
If you haven’t already signed up, you can click on ‘Get Started For Free’ and sign up for an account here.
Once connected, you should see a success message. You can now access TrustPulse features directly from your WordPress dashboard.
Click on ‘View My Campaigns’ and in the next step, we’ll walk you through creating your first campaign and customizing your social proof notifications to match your site’s style and goals.
Step 2: Create a New Campaign
In the TrustPulse dashboard, click on the Create Campaign button to launch the campaign builder.
Now you should see a new page with a menu at the top that lets you build your campaign step by step.
First, let’s add a name for this campaign and select the site you want it to appear on.
Below this, you get 4 options:
- Recent Activity: Displays real-time user actions like purchases or sign-ups.
- On-Fire: Shows the total number of people who’ve taken a specific action within a set timeframe.
- Visitor Count: Reveals the current number of visitors browsing your site or a specific page.
- Action Messages: Allows you to create custom messages for specific events or promotional purposes.
For this campaign, we’ll choose the ‘Recent Activity’ campaign.
You can save your campaign at any time at the bottom left of the page. You can also see a preview of your notification here, which changes as you build your campaign.
Now click on the Next Step button to style your notification.
Step 3: Customize Your Campaign
Now you should be in the Design & Appearance tab. The team behind TrustPulse has made this tool so easy to use and everything is self-explanatory. I’ll walk you through the main areas you need to focus on and let you explore all the settings on your own.
First, you need to know that TrustPulse will automatically try to fetch the user’s name. In case it cannot, you can add a default title for it to fall back on. So under the ‘Refer to Visitors as’ field, you can change this to anything you like such as ‘A Savvy Shopper’ or ‘Our Favorite Fan’.
You can also add your own message text and a URL link. This makes your popup clickable so you can redirect users to a specific product page, sale page, or cart page.
Below this, you’ll see options to style your popup the way you want it to appear. You can change the image in the popup to your logo or anything that’s relevant. There are also options to change the position of your popup such as the top left or right and bottom left or right of the screen.
If you want to make your popup stand out more, you can add an animation effect like slide-in or fade-in.
Need to change the font, color, border, and shadow? You’ll find all these options under the Advanced Settings tab.
When you’re done customizing the look and design of your popup, you can move on to the next step.
Step 4: Configure Activity Settings
Now you can tell TrustPulse what kind of activity you want to track.
Under the Capture Activity tab, you’ll see ‘How would you like to capture activity?’ This has 3 options:
- AutoMagic: Automagically capture user activity and submissions on your site from Form submissions, Clicks, and other user activity.
- WooCommerce: Connect your site to TrustPulse with WooCommerce and automatically capture new order notifications.
- Zapier: Capture user activity and submissions from thousands of potential sources with Zapier.
For this tutorial, we’ll choose AutoMagic where the plugin will automatically track activity from forms and clicks. Under ‘Where should we watch for activity on this site?’, you can choose to track activity on any page or specific URLs.
Then you can select what kind of activity you want to track such as form submissions or button clicks.
TrustPulse also lets you verify the action before capturing it. So for instance, you may want to record a submission only if the user is sent to a success or order confirmation page. This helps prevent payment failures or other errors from being mistakenly recorded as a conversion.
You can use Any next page load if you don’t have a specific URL to add.
Below this, if you want to track the performance of these popups using Google Analytics, you can add your Google Analytics ID here.
Now let’s move on to adding display rules to the popup.
Step 5: Add Display Rules
This tab lets you control where and when these popups appear on your site. You can display them only on specific pages or across your website.
Below this, you can add a timed delay, set the display duration, and even loop notifications.
TrustPulse also lets you enable/disable these notifications on mobile so you can choose what’s best for your user experience.
Now you’re ready to launch your social proof campaign.
Head over to the Publish tab. Here you can see a preview of your notification and you can also view a sample campaign on your site.
Once you’re ready, click on the Launch your TrustPulse campaign button.
When the campaign is published, you’ll see a success message appear that your campaign is now live.
That’s it. You’ve successfully launched a social proof notification campaign on your site.
Bonus: You Can Do More With TrustPulse
Now that you know how to use TrustPulse, you can set up all kinds of notification campaigns.
