Ready to get a stunning WordPress design without breaking the bank?
When I launched my first WordPress site, I honestly didn’t want to spend much because it was all so new to me and I didn’t know if it was going to be a good investment or not.
Back then, free themes were often clunky, poorly coded, and about as customizable as a brick wall.
But times have changed, and free themes have come a long way. These days, some free themes rival their premium counterparts in terms of design, functionality, and flexibility.
I’ve used dozens of them on my own projects and client sites, and I’m continually amazed at what you can achieve without spending a dime.
Of course, not all free themes are created equal. Some are bloated with unnecessary features, others are abandoned and haven’t seen an update in years. And let’s not even talk about the security nightmares you can encounter with some poorly coded options.
That’s why I’ve put together this list of the best free WordPress themes. Let’s get started and help you find the best WordPress theme for your site.

Let’s take a look at the best free themes available for WordPress.
1. Astra
Astra was actually the first free WordPress theme that I absolutely loved.
In the 2010s, Brainstorm Force (the company behind this theme) was developing WordPress sites for businesses and individuals. They found that there was just no free theme which was great! So they launched Astra in 2017 and it has since been one of the most reliable, lightning-fast themes that offers easy customization options and versatility to suit all kinds of websites.
When you install Astra’s Starter Template plugin, you can import premade demo sites that have all the right pages already set up. There are plenty of free and premium options to choose from.
